Myself and a colleague of mine spent the better part of Spring Break going back and forth on the ethics of using CHAT GPT for work. Me being curious, I figured the best way to enter the debate would be to start using the platform. Below is the example of a grant application written by CHAT GPT. Randy:
Prompt: Write a grant application for reducing maternal-morbidity among African-American women in Palm Beach County.
CHAT GPT:
I. Introduction
The high maternal morbidity rates among African-American women in Palm Beach County is a significant concern that needs to be addressed urgently. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), African-American women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than their white counterparts. Moreover, the Palm Beach County Department of Health reports that African-American women in the county have the highest rates of maternal morbidity compared to any other ethnic group. Therefore, we propose to implement an evidence-based program that focuses on reducing maternal morbidity among African-American women in Palm Beach County.
II. Project Description
Our proposed program aims to reduce maternal morbidity by addressing the root causes of the disparities in maternal health outcomes for African-American women in Palm Beach County. The program has three main components:
A. Community Outreach and Education
Our program will prioritize community outreach and education as a critical component of the project. The program will work with community-based organizations, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders to provide culturally responsive education, support, and resources to African-American women and their families. We will focus on promoting the importance of early and regular prenatal care, identifying and addressing high-risk pregnancy factors, and educating women on warning signs and symptoms of pregnancy-related complications.
B. Doula Services
Our program will provide doula services to pregnant African-American women in Palm Beach County. Doulas are trained professionals who provide physical, emotional, and informational support to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Studies have shown that doula services can significantly improve maternal and infant outcomes, particularly among African-American women. Our program will work with trained and certified doulas to provide free or low-cost services to women who otherwise might not have access to this critical support.
C. Provider Training
Our program will provide training to healthcare providers on implicit bias, cultural humility, and best practices for providing care to African-American women. The training will aim to help providers understand the unique challenges faced by African-American women in accessing quality care and provide them with the tools they need to provide culturally responsive care.
III. Project Evaluation
We will evaluate the effectiveness of the program using a mixed-methods approach, including surveys, focus groups, and medical record reviews. Our evaluation will assess the following outcomes:
- Increased rates of early and regular prenatal care among African-American women in Palm Beach County.
- Reduced rates of maternal morbidity among African-American women in Palm Beach County.
- Improved patient satisfaction with care received during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period.
IV. Budget
Our proposed program will require a budget of $500,000. The funds will be used to cover the following costs:
A. Community Outreach and Education – $150,000
- Salaries for outreach and education staff
- Educational materials and resources
- Outreach events and community engagement activities
B. Doula Services – $200,000
- Compensation for trained and certified doulas
- Supplies and materials for doulas
- Administrative costs associated with providing doula services
C. Provider Training – $150,000
- Trainer fees and travel expenses
- Educational materials and resources
- Administrative costs associated with provider training
V. Conclusion
Our proposed program aims to address the significant disparities in maternal health outcomes for African-American women in Palm Beach County. By providing education, support, and resources to women and their families, we hope to increase rates of early and regular prenatal care, reduce rates of maternal morbidity, and improve patient satisfaction with care received during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period. With your support, we believe that our program will improve the health outcomes of African-American women in Palm Beach County.
Back to Randy:
A couple notes on the application itself:
- The content is pretty much free of typos and reads coherently. Furthermore, it contains solid cases for support of the program it proposes and even includes the usual sections of a grant application.
- One way to make the application more relevant would be to add more localized data broken
down by race and ethnicity. The Project Description section is somewhat vague and lacks overview of any partners critical to this work. Lastly it does not mention the key underlying causes; racial disparities in treatment and health care access.
To conclude, it appears CHAT GPT can be an effective tool helping grant writer’s ‘fill in the blanks’ on programmatic content but as we all know, the success of any program depends on other factors beyond just a well written proposal.
